As a queer artist and a fan of anime/manga, I always get excited for any bit of representation or subtext in a series. It makes my day and adds an extra layer to the story to follow the bread trail of clues that show us that certain characters are queer. So, it is always a shame when these things get stripped from a series once it makes its debut in America. In my video essay, I explore how different platforms will change translations, a little bit of what goes into it, as well as explaining and advocating for fan translated works. I was inspired to lean into my queerness and explore queerness in media after reading Whit Pow’s “A Trans Historiography of Glitches and Errors.”
